Don’t get greedy betting on Poker

Betting in poker is something that can take years to master. It seems like a simple idea. When you have good cards, bet high. When you don’t, fold early. Sounds simple right? Well if it were that simple, poker wouldn’t be a game played by people. We’d have robots do it for us or something.

The central problem with betting is a problem of greed. The more you bet, the more you risk. The higher the risk, the higher the reward or penalty for failure. If you make a bet and it pays off for you, it makes you confident and confidence breeds greed.

If people weren’t confident in how they thought they would do, they wouldn’t take risks like they do. They would play it safe and secure. They surely wouldn’t play poker.

So, to be good at betting, you need to be good at managing your own greediness. If you can keep your greed in check and play with your head, you can win a lot of money. If you let greed get the best of you, you’ll make dumb mistakes and take foolish risks.

A truly great poker player knows that risk is involved in every hand, but if you can manage to tip the odds slightly in your favor, the risks can pay off. One way to keep the odds on your side is to keep yourself from being as greedy as your opponents, so that they are the ones making dumb mistakes, not you.

Just remember, the tortise might not finish the race as fast, but the pig always gets slaughtered. Playing it safe might not be as glamorous as going all in, but there is nothing glamorous about going all in and losing the game.
